Greetings! My copy of OS Map Sheet 57d SW, large square M, small square 9, Sector C, dated 1915, gives Vert-Galand Fm (farm), for what its worth.
Peter Wright.

An intersting test is to put each into Google and note the difference in hits, it sort of proves that the English can't, or couldn't speak French, but it appears to come from the mistranslation which appeared on the British drawn official maps produced for all the Services during the First War period.
King Henry IV of Acqitaine was called the Vert Galant, [or Green Gallant in English], but it's relatively easy to understand how the words could have been misheard by a British scribe or cartographer.
But this debate is open to further discussion........

I just wondered if someone could help with this.
I have a picture of the sign there, at the farm now, it clearly says Vert Galant.
In 'High in the Empty Blue', Alex Revell whom I feel is the highest authority, says Galant.
In 'Sagittarius Rising', Cecil Lewis says Vertgaland as one word.
Marson, in 'Scarlet and Khaki' says Vert Galant.
O Conner in the Battlefields Europe series says Galand again.
Where does the confusion come from?
